Biography: Since forming in 1993, The New Antonians have established themselves as a fine
example of what Bigband playing is all about.
The range of styles runs from
the classic wartime Glenn Miller through Count Basie and Duke Ellington to
Frank Sinatra in the 50s-70s and even today with Brian Setzer and Phil Collins
developing modern pops in the Bigband style.
If you have not heard a Bigband before the most noticable factor is the power
and danceable 'bounce' rhythms that this form of band produces. With mainly
acoustic instruments they can produce the punch of a rock band or the subtlety
of a solo singer.
The line up consists of two alto saxes, two tenor saxes and a baritone along with
up to four trumpets and four trombones backed by piano, bass, guitar and drums.
The band is fronted by both a lady singer and singer conductor Simon Probyn.
The players who all have years of professional experience are from across the
south of England from Newbury to Salisbury to Guildford and as far afield as
Canada!
The background of the players encompasses orchestral, brassband, jazz and
opera but all with a love of the 'fun' and freedom of swing jazz.
As a rough guide for your event, the band needs an operating space of 24ft by
12ft and an electricity supply nearby and somewhere to dress and store equipment
cases during performance.
The New Antonians perform regularly throughout the south of England for
events ranging from Concerts to festivals, from Weddings to Society Balls and
from 'Lindy Hop' or Jive dances to Corporate functions. Their programme of music
is adjusted accordingly but always with the big 'swing' feel. Their repertoire
allows up to 3 hours of performance.
Bigband music makes your function especially memorable because so many people have
never seen or heard this style 'live' and are amazed by the unique sound.
Fees are negotiable according to attendance and playing time and distance
from their home base of Andover.
What the others said:
"It started on Broadway...the Andover Broadway! Just like in the movies, this sound could sweep the south. ... It makes you want to dance!" (Meridian TV)
"They have managed to revive the most fabulous sound ... The audience had a fantastic time ...
Definitely bookable." (BBC Wiltshire sound)
"An important feature of a Bigband performance is the competence of the soloists; no problem in this band" (Ray Bonner - Jazz critic)
